Our Heritage

Whitchurch Silk is the brand of Whitchurch Silk Mill, a living museum and working silk mill. A gem of industrial heritage, Whitchurch Silk Mill is located in rural Hampshire, England on the banks of the River Test.

Built in 1815, it is the oldest Silk Mill in England still weaving in its original building. Today, a small team of highly skilled weaver tacklers wind, warp and weave beautiful, artisan cloth using traditional methods and historic machinery to keep heritage silk weaving skills alive.

Preserving the endangered skill of silk weaving and the critically endangered skill of silk ribbon weaving, using looms that date back to the 1890s.

By weaving exclusive fabrics for today’s luxury market, we are securing the future of the methods, skills, traditions and knowledge that have existed at the Mill since 1815. Today we specialise in shot silk taffetas, silk twills, silk linen and silk ribbons.
